Mini Institute April ESL Best Practices at New Milford High PM

This workshop will review some best practices for ESL classroom instruction.  Some simple lesson plans will be presented that are based on the ELP Standards. The rigor has been increased for all Adult Education classes to help students transition into successful careers and/or higher education.

The CASAS Implementation Basics training explains the foundational framework of the CASAS System and CASAS Competencies, as well as introduces additional tools and resources recommended to select, administer and score both paper/pencil and eTest versions of CASAS tests, interpret test results, and identify curriculum support materials to enhance instruction.  A Certificate of Completion will be generated following the completion of this 2-night course.

This workshop is appropriate for new CCS Program Facilitators, Adult Education Directors or teachers who want a great knowledge.

As a group, participants can talk specifics about any updated forms they are utilizing. Participants should bring samples of updated forms, procedures, etc. to share with others and discuss how they approach and schedule their evaluations.

Statewide Disability Workshop-Recognizing Disability in English Language Learners (ELL) - C.E.S. Trumbull

Some of our ELL students have difficulties beyond what is expected of a student learning a new language. Often times these students may show adequate or excellent skills in oral English but can not read or write in English. While others may be able to read English out loud but not comprehend the meaning of the passages and still others may have more personalized difficulties. When we are unable to find a way to influence their learning, we feel stuck. We and our students are frustrated.

This workshop will explore signs of disability vs lack of education in their native language and English, the dilemma of unavailable assessments for possible disability issues and finally universal designed strategies to help these students without obtaining diagnoses.

CCRS Math 202 Lesson Development Workshop-New Haven Adult Ed

Prerequisite: Certificate of completion for CCRS Math 100s

Providing our students with high-quality resources and instruction aides their development of deep understanding and transferable knowledge. During this session, we will build our capacity to identify materials and create lessons aligned to the College and Career Readiness Standards (CCRS) in Mathematics. After determining our lesson purpose, we will work in teams to create lessons aligned to the CCRS. Please bring your copy of the standards, the over-sized overview document from the 100 level sessions, a laptop with Wi-Fi capability, and any “lesson sparks” you would like to reference (activity and lesson idea; an interesting image, graph or news piece; etc.).
